{"id":3182,"date":"2018-11-15T12:38:39","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T11:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.polarharvest.com\/?p=3182"},"modified":"2018-12-03T10:40:12","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T09:40:12","slug":"securite-alimentaire-et-enjeux-energetiques-au-nunavik","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.polarharvest.com\/en\/securite-alimentaire-et-enjeux-energetiques-au-nunavik\/","title":{"rendered":"Food security and energy issues in Nunavik"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/eprint\/aDPPQeBqdR8EFVdi643u\/full\">new scientific article <\/a><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\">published by our team discusses the links between food security and energy security in the far North\u00a0 through the example of greenhouses and community gardening projects in Kuujjuaq and Kangiqsujuaq in Nunavik.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through a mixed-method approach, we analyze social benefits and challenges, as well as the potential food productivity and nutritional contributions of these projects. We discuss the potential of current greenhouse energy optimization scenarios and we address the benefits of Kuujjuaq\u2019s greenhouse in terms of carbon dioxide mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Discussions with the local stakeholders highlighted technical challenges regarding the energy supply, its efficient management and the supply of soil in sufficient quantities. Our results highlight the interconnectedness and complexity of food and energy systems in Nunavik. They show that the establishment of local fresh food production corresponds to a need expressed by the residents and could bypass some of the difficulties associated with the conveyance and freshness of food sold at the supermarket.
